2016 – Zanzibar Breast Cancer Campaign

Fight the Fight. Pink Everyday.

Ilala Afya Centre embarked upon a Breast Cancer Screening Campaign initiative in Zanzibar in efforts to address the needs of accessibility and education described above. The campaign hosted a free screening clinic in Zanzibar. The clinic offered free clinical breast examination, ultrasound services and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC). Educational material which highlights self-breast examination in a pictorial format in Kiswahili printed on a calendar were distributed to all patients. Total number of 512 women screened.

Women requiring further surgical consultations after a positive affirmation have been referred to the specialists at the Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, Zanzibar for a free consultation. The main aim in associating with MoHZ and ZCA is to enhance accessibility to breast screening services and follow through with continuity of care for patients requiring follow-up treatment, regardless of their financial capacity.

2017 Mafia Health Screening Camp

It’s time to give back.

Most of us may know Mafia as a growing tourist spot with some of the purest beaches and richest reefs in the world. Disadvantaged by its location and limited access to the mainland, it has however had limited development in healthcare for the community at large. Our Mafia 2017 health camp aimed to focus on awareness of non-communicable disease, and screening with preventive care; it was a 4 day health camp which ran from 12th Oct – 15th Oct 2017.

With the help of 30 volunteers we screened for Diabetes, Hypertension, Anemia, Respiratory airway diseases, common cancers such as breast, cervix and prostate, dental hygiene and ophthalmology. We were able to have 10,000 screenings for about 1700 patients.

One of the tenets of the Mafia Health Camp mission statement is, "It is time to give back.." and this would not be possible without the hard work of our volunteers and dedication of sponsors. While different volunteers and sponsors may show their support in different ways, their goal is the same — give back to the community of Mafia in any way possible — and it's truly inspirational to see people from all walks of life come together to achieve that goal.
